Treatment with Minimal Sedation

Laughing Gas

Laughing gas induces euphoric, analgesic (pain-relieving) effects when inhaled. For most patients with minor-to-moderate anxiety, laughing gas is a great option. This sedative is delivered through a nose mask, and Dr. Seisman will closely monitor your dosage to ensure you get the proper amount throughout your treatment to keep you calm and pain-free. When you inhale laughing gas, you’ll feel euphoric and a bit disconnected from the things that are happening around you.

One of the best benefits of laughing gas is that it has very minor, short-lived after-effects. The sedative wears off within 5 minutes after Dr. Seisman removes your nose mask. You won’t feel groggy or sleepy, and you can drive yourself home after your treatment.

Relax in the Dentist’s Chair

Oral Conscious Sedation

If you are going through a more invasive procedure, such as a tooth extraction or implant surgery, or if you are very nervous about coming to the dentist, oral conscious sedation may be right for you. This sedative is taken in pill-form about an hour before your treatment.

Once the sedative takes effect, you will feel groggy and sleepy. You may forget most or all of your procedure, or even fall asleep during your treatment. You will not feel any pain or discomfort throughout your appointment.

The effects of oral conscious sedation can last up to 4-8 hours or longer, so you will not be able to go back to your daily routine or drive yourself home right after your treatment. You’ll need to make appropriate travel arrangements to ensure you can get to and from Three Notch Dental safely.

Candidates for Sedation

Common Reasons for Choosing Sedation

The most common reason that patients choose sedation is because they’re nervous about an upcoming dental procedure. Whether it’s a filling, the placement of a crown, or even just a standard six-month cleaning and oral exam, sedation can help you feel more comfortable throughout the process.

Sedation is often also recommended if you’re undergoing multiple oral procedures, as it will help you stay still for several hours at a time. Patients who are afraid of needles may also choose to be sedated to help mitigate their fear of numbing needles. Those who have a strong gag reflex may also benefit from sedation, as it can help suppress this reflex and make it easier for Dr. Seisman to work around their rear teeth.
